The Environmental Art Project
SAT 3 & SUN 4 MAY: 12.00pm-9.00pm

Following the success of last year’s Project, 2008 sees the second year of this exciting visual art programme. The Environmental Art Project, initiated by UZ Events and curated by Guyan Porter, is designed specifically for the grounds of Callendar Park - a beautiful environment that is inspirational to the public and artists alike. It contrasts an imposing stately home with tower blocks, waterways, an extensive forest park and a significant section of the historic Antonine Wall. The environment will stimulate an extraordinary range of visual and environmental art installations and performances. This year, Guyan Porter will be making a challenging new interactive artwork throughout the Festival, which will be showcased alongside work of students from the Glasgow School of Art, including Alice Howard, Douglas Laing, Jonathan Abensur, Kate V. Robertson and Natalie Lambert.

For this years Environmental Art Project, Guyan Porter is constructing a de-conditioning chamber. Using a pre fabricated wooden building which the audience will enter one at a time, the artwork will explore ways that belief systems are constructed, through communal consensus and repetitive messages.

Last Shelter provides an internal participatory experience, designed to question our most deeply held views, with audience participation being central to the aims of the project. The installation explores themes that have characterized recent work, making parallels between social conditioning, brain patterns and religious experience.
Last Shelter explores how concepts and belief systems, regardless of their purpose, can be instilled in us through repeat conditioning, affecting even our most basic understandings of reality.

If we learn through passive acceptance, do we become hard wired to receive information, to believe what we are told, however unbelievable the reality may be?
